Paste a tweet or a thread draft to see its length as X counts it: every link counts as 23 characters, an emoji counts as 2, and Latin letters, digits and punctuation count 1 each. You also get words, sentences, reading time and the limits of LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky and SEO tags in one view.
Limits matter most when one idea runs across several posts. Our guide on writing a Twitter thread that gets read covers where to break each post, and the free thread splitter does the splitting for you.
What is the Twitter Character Counter?
A Twitter character counter measures a post against the 280-character limit of X using X’s own counting rules, published in its open-source twitter-text library. X weighs characters: Latin letters, digits and common punctuation count 1, while emoji, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and styled Unicode letters count 2, and every link counts as the 23 characters of its t.co short link. That is why a plain character count can disagree with the X composer.
How it works
- 1
Paste your post
Type or paste a tweet, a thread draft or any text. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Read the X count
The X counter applies X’s weighting (links 23, emoji 2) and shows how many characters you have left, or roughly how many posts a thread would need.
- 3
Check other platforms
Bars for LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, Facebook, SEO titles and email subject lines turn red when you go over.
Who it's for
X creators
Fit a hook in one post, or see how many posts a thread needs before you split it.
Social media managers
Reuse one draft across X, LinkedIn, Threads and Bluesky without guessing each limit.
SEO writers
Keep titles near 60 characters and meta descriptions under about 160 so they don’t truncate in search.

Frequently asked questions
How many characters can a tweet have?+
A standard post on X can have 280 characters, counted with X’s weighting: links count 23 and emoji count 2. X Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters, but the first 280 are what show before the “Show more” cut.
Do emojis count as 2 characters on X?+
Yes. X counts every emoji as 2 characters, including combined emoji such as a family, a skin-tone variant or a flag: they are made of several code points but count once, as 2.
Do links count toward the character limit on X?+
Yes, always as 23 characters: X shortens every link to a t.co address, so a long URL costs the same as a short one.
Do spaces and line breaks count as characters?+
Yes. Spaces, line breaks and punctuation each count as 1 character, on X and on every other platform in the list.
Why does my count differ from other character counters?+
Most counters count every character as 1. X weighs them: Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, emoji and styled Unicode letters (like bold text from a formatter) count 2, and links count 23. This counter applies those rules.
Is this character counter free?+
Completely free, with no account required. It runs entirely in your browser, so your text is never sent to a server.
